FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is dragon boat paddling like?
It’s a great mix of fitness, teamwork and fun. There’s something pretty special about being out on Sydney Harbour, paddling in time with your crew and working together towards a common goal.
And, of course, there’s always the reward of coffee and breakfast afterwards!
Can I give it a try?
Absolutely! Our New Paddler Sessions are held on Saturdays, where you’ll start alongside other beginners and learn the basics together.
Your first month is FREE, so come and see what you think. Reserve a spot here.
Fair warning — the paddling bug can be surprisingly contagious.
I'm not really competitive. Is it still for me?
Definitely. Some of our members love racing; others are here for the fitness, fun and social side — and plenty enjoy a bit of both.
With four experienced coaches and three boats, we can cater for different fitness levels, experience and goals. You can challenge yourself as much — or as little — as you like.
What do I need to bring?
We provide the boat, paddle and coaching, plus life jackets if you're not confident on the water. You just need to bring:
- Comfortable gym clothes you don't mind getting wet — it is a water sport!
- Shoes, thongs or water shoes that can get wet. Closed-toe shoes are required for racing.
- A water bottle — preferably not metal, as they tend to clink around in the boat.
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunnies.
- A change of clothes if you'd like to join the crew for breakfast afterwards.
- A sense of fun and adventure.
Will someone show me what to do?
Absolutely. One of our four experienced coaches will introduce you to the basics and help with your technique, timing and form.
You'll also get plenty of encouragement from the rest of the crew. We were all new paddlers once.
Where do Easts train?
We meet at the Rose Bay Scout Hall, 8 Vickery Avenue, Rose Bay — right next door to Club Rose Bay — before heading down to the water.
Our training ground is beautiful Sydney Harbour, and depending on the session and conditions, we paddle around Rose Bay and nearby areas including Double Bay, Vaucluse, Nielsen Park and Watsons Bay.
See our paddling schedule for session times and further details.
